Individual responsibility
When you join, you sign the application form which includes the following statement: ‘I accept that mountaineering is inherently dangerous and take full responsibility for myself.’
How do I join SMC?
Email us to make contact and for further information here SMC. Then come along to a few meets, get to know people and you will be given an application form.
How many members are in SMC?
About 100 but not all are ‘active’.
How far do you walk on a Tuesday?
Usually 4-6 miles, up to 2 hours in duration. We start at 7.30pm and go to a pub afterwards.

Not for activities in the UK. If you went on a climbing trip abroad you would need insurance.

It depends on the venue as some are more suitable for beginners than others.
Do I need to be able to read a map?
No. You may be encouraged to practise!
Is there an age limit for joining?
Yes. Anyone 18 years or over is welcome.
How fit do I need to be?
Reasonably fit but meets often subdivide according to ability and speed.
