Shrewsbury Mountaineering Club

The SMC is a long established group of friends with a love for the mountains and the outdoors. We currently have around 100 members of all ages and abilities. We meet every Tuesday evening, all year round, for a short and sociable walk around the Shropshire Hills ending with a visit to a local country pub.  The climbers also meet on Thursday evenings; outdoors in the summer and indoors in winter  or when the weather is bad.

We also organise day walks in nearby mountain areas every month and regularly throughout the year we visit our club hut in Snowdonia. We also have weekend or longer trips to our favourite destinations such as the Lake District, Scotland, the Alps and Spain to name a few. Check out our latest bi-monthly newsletter to find out more about the SMC and for taste of our activities check out our events calendar.

For one night, and one night only, we are very lucky to have a private screening of ‘The Dawn Wall’, at The Old Market Hall in Shrewsbury.

With the closure of High Sports, and the end of Stu Cathcart’s years of effort putting together his fundraising winter lecture series, I felt there was a gap that would be sorely missed. So this winter I’m doing a little test run to see if I can keep the same kind of thing going; I’ve put together a ‘Shrewsbury Winter Adventure Series’ of films and a lecture, which I hope will give friends, climbers and adventurers alike, the chance to get together, have a good catch up, and get inspired!

The series includes The Dawn Wall, the Brit Rock Film Tour (staring our very own Shropshire strong boy, Angus Kille), a lecture on The Everest Triple Crown and maybe, fingers crossed, Free Solo.

So to kick things off, come and see the stunning Dawn Wall, brought to life on the big screen. A story of perseverance, free climber Tommy Caldwell and climbing partner Kevin Jorgeson attempt to scale the impossible 3000ft Dawn Wall of El Capitan. With breathtaking cinematography, and being shown at the wonderful Old Market Hall venue, this first film is one not to miss.

Check out the trailer here: m.youtube.com/watch?v=edfw9ip9sCQ

The screening is on 18th November at 7.30pm, with a brief introduction beforehand. Unfortunately there are very limited spaces. These will be allocated on a first come first served basis, only upon receipt of payment. I’ll be pricing each event separately to cover the costs of the venue and film license; any profit will go to charity. For The Dawn Wall each ticket is £15. Please email me ASAP for payment details: adambooth@nhs.net.

Please share this post far and wide! Hope to see you there.
