Shrewsbury Mountaineering Club

The SMC is a long established group of friends with a love for the mountains and the outdoors. We currently have around 100 members of all ages and abilities. We meet every Tuesday evening, all year round, for a short and sociable walk around the Shropshire Hills ending with a visit to a local country pub.  The climbers also meet on Thursday evenings; outdoors in the summer and indoors in winter  or when the weather is bad.

We also organise day walks in nearby mountain areas every month and regularly throughout the year we visit our club hut in Snowdonia. We also have weekend or longer trips to our favourite destinations such as the Lake District, Scotland, the Alps and Spain to name a few. Check out our latest bi-monthly newsletter to find out more about the SMC and for taste of our activities check out our events calendar.

What a beautiful (if hot) day to visit The Arans! To start, we took the main path, which winds gradually up the side of Cwm Hengwm to emerge onto Drws Bach. Sheltered in the valley and without the benefit of a cooling breeze, everyone found the ascent hot work. Once we achieved the high ground we felt a little cooler. We paused briefly by the memorial before heading up to Aran Fawddwy. The views were stunning and it was the perfect spot for lunch. We returned via the boardwalks, across what is normally very boggy ground. However our recent good weather has dried it to an easy softness. Clouds were starting to build up by this point, giving us some very welcome shade. And so, with the sky darkening behind us, we made the final descent to the car park by following the stream along the steep little gorge between Craig Cywarch and Creigiau Camddwr. It was a great walk in good company. ... See MoreSee Less
